is a wild plant native to Europe. It has long been used in herbal medicine, it is usually considered a natural remedy for eye problems. In folk medicine, eyebright is often used as an ingredient in glasses, eye drops or eyeliners. However, there are concerns that the use of such drugs may lead to infections, irritation and other eye problems.Eyebright contains compounds called tannins, which appear to possess anti-inflammatory properties.
Used for EyebrightEyebright is commonly used to treat eye conditions such as conjunctivitis and eye strain. However, eyebright is also said to help treat many other health problems, including: allergies, colds, cough, joints, headache, sinusitis, Sore throat.
To date, scientific support for the alleged health benefits of eyebright is very rare. Available research includes a small study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2000, which focused on the effectiveness of eyebright as a treatment for conjunctivitis. For the study, 65 people with conjunctivitis were treated with eye drops containing eye cancer, which were administered one to five times a day.
In follow-up studies performed seven days and 14 days after the start of treatment, complete recovery was observed in 53 patients. An additional 11 patients showed “clear improvement” in symptoms such as redness, swelling, and burning. However, one patient experienced a slight worsening of the symptoms of conjunctivitis. In a recent study (published in the Balkan Medical Journal in 2014), cell tests taken from the surface layer of the human cornea showed that eyelid extracts could have anti-inflammatory effects.
